In a space of months, that gap narrowed. The list of adroit political moves reads thus:<br /><br />Spinning the expenses scandal into a cross-party problem<br /><br />Painting the tories as the do-nothing 'bankers' mates' posh party on the economy (he didn't need too much help on this one)<br /><br />Lifting the lid off Ashcroft at precisely the right political moment<br /><br />etc etc.<br /><br />A measure of Mandelson's strategic nous is the Spectator's frantic and repeated attempts to portray him as 'irrelevant'. Make no mistake, Lord Mandelson played a major role in rescuing NuLab from electoral oblivion. <br /><br />Anyway, so much for Cleggmania, didn't see much of that around yesterday. It's time the Brits learned to do things the Indian and European way- in an era of leaders without integrity and all-round charisma, let alone spotless personal histories, coaltion politics is the future.
